Where Love Meets Sustainability: 10 Earth-Friendly Wedding Ideas

Earth Day reminds us just how important it is to care for this beautiful planet we call home. As a family and wedding photographer, I’m always looking for ways to reduce my environmental impact—while still capturing your most meaningful moments. Whether you’re planning your big day or just hoping to freeze a few memories with your loved ones, here are some of my favourite sustainable wedding ideas that celebrate both love and the earth.

1. Choose Nature as Your Backdrop

Let’s skip the studio and head outside! I love photographing in local outdoor spots like parks, beaches, and forests. Natural light and scenery don’t just make for beautiful photos—they also help minimize energy usage and keep things simple and sustainable.

2. Print with Purpose

When you print your photos, you’re turning memories into heirlooms. I partner with print labs that have have endless options. Many of which include recycled papers, eco-friendly packaging, and plant-based inks—so you can feel good about every print, album, and keepsake.

3. Sustainable Styling Tips

Choose sustainable, secondhand, or ethically made wedding attire. Many bridal shops now offer options that prioritize sustainability.

For other photography sessions choose neutral tones, soft/natural fabrics, and timeless silhouettes, as they always look great on camera. I encourage clients to choose pieces they already own and love or something they can borrow or thrift and wear again. If you’re looking for something outside of your usual wardrobe, ditch fast fashion and give renting a chance. It’s a trendy and sustainable choice—win-win!

4. Respect the Spaces We Shoot In

Wherever we’re shooting—whether it’s a trail, a garden, or the beach—I always follow Leave No Trace principles. That means we leave the area just as we found it, or better.

5. Sustainable Wedding Venue

Choose a venue that emphasizes sustainability, such as one that uses renewable energy, practices water conservation, and supports local food sourcing. Outdoor venues, like botanical gardens or nature reserves, are also great options that help connect your event to the environment.

Opt for a caterer who specializes in locally-sourced, organic, and seasonal foods. Reducing food waste and serving plant-based options can also make your wedding more eco-friendly. Check out The Conscious Farm Kitchen or Lowlands Fire Food

7. Go Digital When Possible

Digital RSVPs, online galleries, and virtual guestbooks help reduce waste without sacrificing style. I offer beautiful digital galleries so you can share your images instantly—with no paper needed. When you are ready to print see step number 2 and we can work together to choose a more sustainable printing option.

If you prefer printed invitations, choose companies that offer eco-friendly options, such as using soy-based inks and sustainable paper.

8. Work with Sustainable Wedding Vendors

From florists to planners, I love connecting with vendors who care about the environment as much as I do. If you’re looking for recommendations, I’ve got a few favourites up my sleeve! Each vendor will have their own sustainable wedding ideas, as well, so don’t be afraid to ask.

9. Responsible Gear + Travel Choices

Behind the scenes, I make small choices that add up—like using rechargeable batteries, carpooling to shoots, and minimizing unnecessary printing. I also use my gear as long as possible. If it’s not broken and still works, why would I replace it? I make my cameras and gear work for me, repairing when necessary instead of tossing and buying new.

10. Environmental Give Back

• Instead of traditional wedding favours, consider asking your guests to contribute to an environmental charity or organization in lieu of gifts. You could include this request on your wedding website or in your invitations, explaining why you’ve chosen this cause.

• Plant a tree together as a couple or have a tree-planting ceremony. You can also sponsor a forest or donate to a tree-planting organization.
